INSiDE Movie Review

Inside is an outstanding short movie that would give the audience insight into Multiple Personality Disorder within a five-minute clip. It is a mixture of mystery and horror. A well-delivered story with a mind-blowing plot twist!

SYNOPSIS. The film centers around a man held inside a facility for investigation and study. Along the run, he was identified to have nine distinct personalities and found to have been in control by his alternate self, namely, Bo, Pierce, Beth, Owen, Joey, Harris, Thomas, Mary, and Dr. Jane. Frustrated to get out of the facility, Daniel was set to materialize by Dr. Jane to work together with Dr. Blake to pass the evaluation and receive a supervised release.

The plot for the movie "Inside" was complicated and confusing, accompanied by a startling surprise at the ending. It depicts a man who has multiple personalities who wanted to take control of the other. An alternate personality may be of a different gender, have a different name, or a distinct set of manners and preferences, as shown in the movie. It shows the internal conflict between the personalities and the struggle for dominant control. Despite its short length, the director and cast were able to deliver smoothly what it looks like and what happens inside the mind of a person with MPD. I admire the main actor for delivering the exact emotion, expressions of the different traits. The choice of background music, sound, lighting position, angles, and editing also added to its apprehension. At a brisk five-minute, I personally thought it was too short as it also failed to explain the context and reasons for why Daniel's nine distinct personalities were formed and developed. In one of the scenes, after a chaotic and rigorous discussion with the other personalities, "Dr. Jane" successfully pulled out Daniel and spoken to him, stating that it was good to have him back after a long time of being hidden. It seems that the only way to move out of the facility, solve their problem, and obtain what they desire was for all of them to work together. However, when the real doctor, Dr. Blake, arrived and interviewed Daniel, we were surprised by how "Dr. Jane" materialize as one of his alter persona and repressed Daniel again, contradicting her last statement about striving to work unitedly. Daniel then again reached a war for survival among all of those within him as "Dr. Jane" was positioned to dominate others, including Daniel.

Overall, Inside is a PG-18 mystery/thrill/horror movie that will show you the battle inside the head of a person with MPD. I would not recommend this for people with anxiety to watch as most of the scenes are frightening. Somehow, this movie has similarities to SPLIT, played by James McAvoy and directed by M. Night Shyamalan in 2016, which tackled dissociative identity disorder and alters egos. It is an informative short clip film about mental illness and how society, chiefly the government, treats individuals who suffer from this particular disorder. The cast's acting is excellent, despite the incomprehensible and limited camera exposure of each character/personality, the cinematography and editing were outstanding, and the plot was unanticipated. Inside is highly recommended if you are looking for a brief explanation of a person with an MPD.
